Proud to be Filipino

Our little Leapians charmed us with the various Filipino dances as they presented before us last August 20, 2010, to celebrate the culmination of the “Buwan ng Wika”. This year’s theme was “Sa pangangalaga sa wika at kalikasan, wagas na pagmamahal talagang kailangan.”

For their presentation, the third and fourth graders showcased the Muslim Dance; the first and second graders serenaded us with our local love songs we call kundiman; the Level III danced to the tune of “Paru-parong Bukid”; the Level II danced with their Salakot; the girls of Toddler and Level I danced the Itik-Itik; and the boys of Toddler and Level I danced the Sakuting. Of course, Teacher Rachel and Mrs. Morales, representatives from the LOFLC teachers and parents alike did not fail to impress the crowd with their likewise graceful dance moves in their rendition of the Tinikling dance.

As has been the LOFLC tradition, the program ended with a community dining, we commonly call salu-salo. Various kinds of local food we call kakanin were brought and shared by all.

This celebration of the “Buwan ng Wika” was aimed at introducing to our little children a glimpse of what our Filipino culture is. Also, the activity itself helped them embrace and practice some of the Filipino traditions that have somehow been forgotten. On that day, the Leapians felt what and how it is like being a true Filipino in mind and heart – simple yet festive in every way.
